Reading speed and comprehension

Understand measured WPM, presentation speed and comprehension-adjusted WPM, with a practical way to compare reading sessions.

A reading rate becomes useful when you know what it measures. readbooks.in separates the selected RSVP presentation speed, the time spent reading, and answers to authored comprehension questions. These are related observations, not interchangeable scores.

Three numbers, three meanings

Selected RSVP WPM
The setting that controls the word display. Pauses at sentence endings affect total duration.
Measured reading WPM
Words read divided by active reading time in minutes. A 600-word passage read in two minutes gives 300 WPM. Paused time and time answering the quiz are excluded.
Effective WPM
Measured WPM multiplied by the fraction of correct answers. It is a simple session comparison, not a scientifically standardized measure of reading ability.

Session B has a higher reading rate, but the same effective rate in this example. That is a reason to inspect the missed answer, not a reason to declare either session universally better. Different passages and questions can change the result.

Make your practice comparisons useful

  1. Start with the normal reading test to time a passage without an imposed display pace.
  2. Read to the end, then answer from memory. Review the explanations after submitting.
  3. Use another unfamiliar passage of similar length and difficulty for the next comparison. Repeating a passage can improve a score through familiarity.
  4. Check the missed question and your comfort as well as WPM. Reduce the pace when the main idea becomes difficult to follow.

Understand the limits of a short quiz

Three questions give only four possible scores: 0%, about 33%, about 67% and 100%. They sample a few details or ideas, so one attempt cannot establish a precise comprehension percentage for everything you read. readbooks.in’s practice content is for self-observation, not diagnosis or a standardized educational assessment.

Personal PDFs, EPUBs and pasted text have no authored quiz attached. Their comprehension is shown as unassessed. Navigating or skipping during a timed session also changes what can be inferred from its reading rate; readbooks.in distinguishes those sessions from continuous reading measurements.

Use the WPM calculator to reproduce a calculation from your own word count and elapsed time. Supply a comprehension percentage only when you have a score to use. See How to use an RSVP reader for the controls.
