How to use an RSVP reader

RSVP stands for rapid serial visual presentation. In readbooks.in, words appear one at a time around a fixed focus point. The pace control sets how quickly they are presented. Normal mode keeps the passage on screen so you can look back, pause over a sentence and read at your own pace.

Start with a short, unfamiliar passage

1. Open the reader and choose a practice passage, paste text or import a file.
2. Set a pace you can follow. The toolbar has 200, 300, 400 and 500 WPM presets; the custom control accepts 100–800 WPM. A preset is a display setting, not a target you have to reach.
3. Select start reading. The visible counter starts at 0s and counts active reading time. Pause freezes it; resume continues it.
4. If you lose the thread, pause and use the sentence controls or switch to normal mode. Restart begins again at the first word and resets the timer.

Compare what you understood

Use the authored questions after a practice passage. With your own text, stop after a section and explain its main point in your own words. Uploaded books have no attached quiz; use your own summary to check understanding. Increase the setting only when the material still makes sense to you.

A higher display rate is not evidence that you have understood more. A research review by Rayner and colleagues describes limits to very large speed gains with good comprehension. Reading also lets people look back at earlier material; a one-word display changes that experience.

Presentation WPM and elapsed time

At 300 WPM, the base word interval is 0.2 seconds. readbooks.in holds sentence-ending words longer, so a 300-word RSVP session can take more than one minute even without a manual pause. The reading time estimate assumes a steady pace; your live timer records what actually happens.

Use the reading mode that suits the text

RSVP is an option for focused sequential reading. Normal mode is useful for comparing paragraphs, reviewing a definition or working through dense material. For screen-reader access, use normal mode: rapidly changing RSVP words are not announced, while the full normal-reading text is available.

Space controls playback when focus is in the reading area. R restarts, / opens find, and B opens bookmarks. You can disable those single-key shortcuts in Preferences. Buttons remain available.
