The United Nations marked the International Day of the Girl on 11 October with a call to protect girls’ rights and end child marriage. The Secretary-General’s message urged greater investment in opportunities and protection for girls.
The appeal connects education, participation and freedom from harmful practices with girls’ ability to shape their own futures. It asks governments and communities to address barriers that can prevent those rights from being realised.
This was a message for an annual international observance. It did not create a new binding law or announce that child marriage had been eliminated; its purpose was to press for sustained action on existing commitments.
