Canadian writer Anne Carson was awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on 8 October. Her work crosses poetry, essays, translation and classical scholarship, drawing on ancient texts while experimenting with contemporary literary forms.
The University of Toronto, where Carson earned three degrees, welcomed the award to its alumna. UC Berkeley also recalled her time teaching classics and comparative literature and her appointment as its Holloway poetry lecturer during the 2000–01 academic year.
Berkeley recalled a lecture at which Carson read from The Beauty of the Husband, a work organised into 29 sections of narrative verse. Its account connects her experiments with literary form to her teaching, offering readers a glimpse of the relationship between her scholarship and creative writing.
