G7 finance authorities plan exercises simulating cyberattacks involving advanced artificial intelligence, according to a 16 October report. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama described the agreement after ministers and central-bank governors met at the IMF gathering in Bangkok.
The proposed tabletop exercises would test how existing procedures work when financial services face a serious disruption. Officials would use the findings to improve response manuals and coordination between finance ministries and central banks.
Private financial institutions could participate depending on the scenarios chosen. The announcement concerns preparedness work rather than a completed drill or evidence that a particular bank has suffered an AI-driven breach. Its effectiveness will depend on the exercises and subsequent changes.
