The World Health Organization called for stronger action against lead poisoning in a statement published on 15 October. The appeal came ahead of the international prevention week scheduled for 18–24 October.
WHO highlighted work on product controls, monitoring and laboratory capacity, alongside preparations for a global action plan and its prevention-support package. Its account included capacity-building activity in five Indian states.
The emphasis is on preventing exposure and improving the systems used to detect and reduce it, particularly where children are at risk. The announcement describes public-health work and forthcoming initiatives, rather than a new clinical treatment or an already completed elimination of lead exposure.
