NASA released a Hubble image of NGC 1827 on 16 October, showing the spiral galaxy nearly edge-on. The galaxy lies roughly 37 million light-years away in the constellation Columba, according to the agency’s description.
Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys captured dust lanes and bright blue regions along the disk where new stars are likely forming. A bright star visible near the central bulge is in the foreground, rather than part of that distant galaxy.
NASA linked the observations to a wider programme examining low-mass galaxies around systems resembling the Milky Way. Such measurements help researchers compare observations with cosmological models. The release presents an image and research context, not the discovery of a previously unknown galaxy.
