The Union Cabinet approved continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme from 2026–27 through 2030–31 with an outlay of ₹53,428 crore. The official announcement on 14 October also set out new names for the programme and its component schemes.
The disability-pension changes lower the qualifying disability threshold from 80% to 40% and remove the previous minimum-age restriction. The announcement increases assistance and retains the existing form of old-age, widow and family-benefit schemes.
The government said revised implementation guidelines would follow within three months. Cabinet approval therefore sets the programme’s direction and funding framework; it is distinct from every beneficiary already receiving a revised payment.
