India’s wholesale-price inflation reached 11.39% in September, according to reports on the government’s 14 October data release. The year-on-year rate increased from 9.92% in August under the index’s 2022–23 base.
Fuel and power prices were a major source of pressure, with reported inflation of 25.85%. Food inflation was 8.66%, while manufactured-product prices also contributed to the overall wholesale increase.
The Wholesale Price Index tracks a different basket and stage of pricing from the Consumer Price Index. The 11.39% figure therefore should not replace the separately released 5.54% retail-inflation rate, even though both sets of figures describe September.
