India’s merchandise exports rose about 23% from a year earlier to $44.4 billion in September, according to trade figures released on 15 October. Imports were $74.61 billion, leaving a goods-trade deficit of $30.21 billion.
The deficit was wider than August’s $26.86 billion, even though reporting described it as narrower than the comparable gap a year earlier. Those monthly and annual comparisons point in different directions because they use different reference periods.
The figures cover merchandise trade. They should not be treated as the combined balance for goods and services, where services exports and imports would also need to be included.
