India’s provisional consumer-price inflation rate rose to 5.54% in September, according to the statistics ministry’s release on 12 October. The corresponding food-inflation measure was 7.74%, indicating stronger price pressure in the household food basket.
The release uses the Consumer Price Index with a 2024 base and compares September prices with the same month a year earlier. Its publication in October does not make the figures a measure of October inflation.
CPI tracks prices faced by consumers and is separate from wholesale inflation. The release supplies data for assessing household costs and monetary conditions; it does not itself announce a Reserve Bank interest-rate decision.
