The Sensex surged 1,533.72 points to close at 74,315.61 on 15 October. The Nifty gained 374.65 points and ended at 22,997.35, just short of the 23,000 mark, according to closing-market reports.
The gains amounted to about 2.11% and 1.66% respectively. Large-company advances lifted the headline indices, but mid-cap and small-cap measures were weaker, so the benchmark rise did not describe every segment of the market.
